Diamond Celebrates Global Accessibility Awareness Day With The First Annual State Of Accessibility Report
Los Angeles, CA – May 16, 2019 – 43% of the Top 100 websites in the world are fully inaccessible to People with Disabilities (“PwD”) according to the State of Accessibility Report (“SOAR”) released today by Diamond, a digital agency at the intersection of development and innovation. SOAR establishes a baseline of the current state of digital accessibility. Released in celebration of the annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD), SOAR aims to not only benchmark the state of digital accessibility, but provide a push to improve the situation with some concrete action items.
“For eight years, GAAD has seen tremendous traction,” says Joe Devon, co-founder of both Diamond and GAAD. “But the success of GAAD speaks to the severity of the underlying problem: we have failed to achieve web content parity for people with disabilities. We created this report to not only benchmark the current state of web accessibility, but, to engage the digital and developer ecosystems in a way geared at the developer community.”
Written with the digital community in mind, the SOAR report identifies specific accessibility deficiencies of top websites and includes a list of actionable steps developers can take to address accessibility issues now. SOAR touches on the rise in accessibility lawsuits over the past three years and provides an overview of workplace trends supporting the continued prominence of accessibility as a priority for both job-seekers and companies alike.
“As a member of both the developer and accessibility communities, it is my hope this report will help create a bridge between the two worlds and empower all stakeholders in the digital community to collectively move the needle on accessibility,” states Devon.
